ABOUT ANDREW BOOTH

HELLO

I am a Doctoral researcher at the University of Westminster, London. I am a sociolinguistic researcher specialising in dialectology and phonology. I am from the Neath valley in South Wales and have a strong interest in accents of all kinds.

After graduating I worked for 6 years as an English language teacher, teaching children, university students and adults in language schools and universities in different countries. My interest in the English language and the way it is produced was enhanced when teaching in Italy and Vietnam. Meeting different speakers of English all over the world has only increased my curiosity in this strange language.

I returned to University and took an MA in Language and Communication research at Cardiff University. During this time I broadened and deepened my knowledge within linguistics and in particular in accents/phonology and dialects. My research during my time in Cardiff concentrated on Welsh accents and in particular, how they are portrayed in film.

I am now researching on the Isle of Man, combining my interest in accents and all things Celtic. Please read 'THE PROJECT' for more about my island research.

From January to April 2018, I worked at the British Library accessioning and cataloguing different accents and dialects (and sneaking in some Manx-English into the national databases! I recorded a podcast about the project and linguistics in general. Please have a listen on soundcloud here ------->
